Georgia’s Food Processing Appeal: Where Agriculture Meets Economic Opportunity

Georgia has long stood out as a leading agricultural state, known for peanuts, poultry, and pecans. But today, its real economic distinction lies in what happens after the crops are harvested.

Food processing, the critical bridge between farm production and consumer markets, has evolved into one of the state’s most dynamic and impactful industries, fueling jobs, capital investment and broad economic growth.

A strong farm economy creates fertile ground for food processing, but Georgia’s appeal goes far beyond raw inputs. With more than 1,500 food processing facilities located across the state, Georgia has built one of the nation’s most concentrated and diversified production bases. Nearly half of the country’s top 100 food-processing companies operate here, spanning everything from packaged goods and ready-to-eat meals to beverages and frozen foods.

Recent data underscores the sector’s economic heft. In the past decade alone, 293 food processing companies have opened or expanded operations in Georgia, bringing more than $4.75 billion in capital investment, a clear signal that the industry isn’t just growing, it’s accelerating.

Last year alone, 44 new food processing projects were announced statewide, resulting in $1.61 billion in capital investment and creating 5,611 new jobs for Georgians. This growth reflects not only expanding domestic demand for food products but also the strategic advantage Georgia offers manufacturers looking to serve the Southeast, the fastest-growing consumer market in the United States.

Experts also point to the industry’s contribution to the state’s economic output. Georgia’s food processing industry contributes over $11 billion annually to the state’s GDP, making it one of the largest manufacturing sectors by value.

Jobs That Matter

Beyond headline numbers, food processing sustains meaningful careers across Georgia’s communities from rural towns anchored by poultry plants to suburban manufacturing hubs supplying national grocery chains. The industry supports thousands of jobs in processing, logistics, quality control, packaging, maintenance, and more, providing entry-level opportunities and skilled technical careers alike.

Overall, food and fiber production and related industries supported more than 323,000 jobs in 2022, contributing $83.6 billion in economic output to the state’s $1.4 trillion economy.

Why Georgia Wins

That success isn’t accidental; it’s the result of intentional strategy. Georgia’s competitive advantages include:

  • Proximity to raw materials: With tens of thousands of farms producing a wide variety of commodities, processors gain efficiency and reliability.
  • Infrastructure excellence: The Port of Savannah is one of the nation’s busiest container ports, with unmatched refrigerated shipping capacity and direct ocean access.
  • Skilled workforce and training programs: Partnerships between industry, technical colleges, and workforce development agencies equip employees with the skills needed for 21st-century food manufacturing.
  • Business-friendly climate: Competitive utilities, targeted incentives, and streamlined permitting make Georgia an attractive destination for capital-intensive operations.

A Foundation for Rural Prosperity

Perhaps most importantly, food processing catalyzes economic activity in communities across the state. When a processing plant opens or expands, the benefits ripple outward, supporting transportation providers, cold storage firms, equipment suppliers, and local services. Those jobs aren’t just numbers on a page –  they are stable careers with living wages that strengthen local economies.

Today, Georgia’s food processing appeal is more than an agricultural asset. It’s an economic engine, a workforce solution, and a growth strategy for the next generation.
